The OUSD elementary science program centers around the FOSS curriculum. FOSS kits are provided to all elementary school sites on a rotational basis every trimester. Live organisms and consumable materials will also be fully supplied. Below for details and resources related to the program.
The SIRA is comprised of nine FOSS instructional guides for grades 3rd-5th. They prepare teachers and students for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and increase opportunities for CCSS-aligned language and literacy skills. The SIRA defines clear learning goals, encourages frequent formative assessment, and leads to a concise summative assessment for each FOSS modules. All 3rd-5th grade teachers will be using the SIRA. Please review the SIRA overview document for more information. Hard copies of the SIRA documents for all teachers were given to Lead Science Teachers at the August meeting. Electronic copies are also available to OUSD teachers and staff on Drive. Educators outside of OUSD may access samples of the SIRA here.
K-2 SIRA Elements are currently being piloted. If you are interested in accessing them, please contact the Lead Science Teacher at your school.
Electronic versions of the FOSS Teacher Guides are available from Lead Science Teachers at each school site.
Visit FOSSweb to access complete sets of supporting materials for each FOSS kit including teacher resources, instructional videos, student learning outcomes, blackline masters in English and Spanish, and supplemental materials. Register as a "Teacher in a District" and follow the directions using your OUSD email. You will then have access to multiple versions of FOSS modules. Note that the K-5 FOSS version in use is Oakland is the California Edition (2007). You can then use code "AME1CA6195" to activate premium content using the link on the right of each module.
To access materials for the TK Fabric Kit after registering, click on "Activate a New Module" at the top of the window. Use code "AME2EL7862" and select and add Fabric (2nd. Ed) to add to your modules.
Each school has a designate Science Teacher Leader to assist with the coordination and implementation of FOSS. Our first meeting is at the Oakland Zoo, Education Building on August 18, 2016, 4-6 pm, followed by a BBQ from 6-7 pm. Teacher Leaders should also reference the Start of the Year Checklist to make sure your school is ready for the start of school. Subsequent meetings will take place bi-monthly.
Additional resources and documents for LSTs can be found on our Google Drive. Use your OUSD login to access the files.
